How To Make Dark Ambient Music
This feature is exclusive to Java Edition and Legacy Console Edition. |
Into the Abyss: Make Ambient Drones in Live. With the availability of synthesizers, samplers, and electronic effects, drone music has progressed into different directions. Dark ambient, minimal, shoegaze, dub techno, doom metal, and even the more experimental ends of rock and pop now incorporate elements of drone.
Ambience (cave sounds in Legacy Console Edition and eerie noise according to subtitles) is a set of sounds that occasionally play when the player is in proximity to a dark space.
Behavior[edit]
Ambient sounds can be played in any dimension, including the Nether and the End, and can be heard in both singleplayer and multiplayer. Ambience can occur in a space of any size, but they seem much more likely to be heard in larger spaces that are completely filled with a light level lower than 8, without any lighting from the sky. Ambience is more likely to play from the direction of darker spaces. The space does not need to be sealed off or hidden - ambience can be heard from a space that the player can actually see - nor does the player need to be underground to hear ambient sounds.
List of ambient sounds[edit]
Ambient sounds are found in the assets/objects
subdirectory in the .minecraft folder. See this tutorial for locating specific sound files. Ambient sounds play randomly in different pitches, as other sounds of Minecraft do.There are 19 sounds (Cave 1 - 19) in total:

Trivia[edit]
Dark Ambient Artists
- Since bodies of water have light level zero everywhere more than 4 blocks deep, on rare occasions ambient noises can be heard if the player is standing by an ocean or deep body of water, regardless of light level outside the water.
- When ambient sound 14 is viewed in a spectrogram, it appears to be a creeper face.

When I say ambient I do not mean chill out/trip hop ambient I mean the kind of soundscapes you would expect to hear in a game or film such as silent hill, subtle but you are still aware of it.
I have been doing so for a while now but using external equipment such as my guitars and bass and very little vst input. I want to shy away from using my gear and focus solely on vst's simply because I am aiming more at soundtracks and scores and as I am a home (and beginner) recorder I want it to have a bit more of that 'everything is consistent' kind of feel but my problem is I just do not know where to start. I have plenty of ambient pads but no clue on how to use them really to create the sounds I want and for the most part they are kind of corny and hokey, more Plan 9 than Aliens kind of sound.
Sample track of the style I mean (not done by me in anyway), but not at all limited to this, what would you do to take the same basic sound of this and make it darker and colder?
Any help is greatly appreciated, you're all beautiful
